On average the coil, rotary, or digital machine method of implanting pigment into the skin for permanent makeup will last anywhere from one to five years. One or more continuation visit (touch up sessions) following the initial procedure is highly recommended. A fresh color application is recommended two to three years after your initial treatment depending on skin type and care. Avoiding the sun, tanning beds, retinol, alpha hydroxy, and use of glycolic acids such as fruit acids commonly found in some toners, cleansers and moisturizers will help with the longevity of your permanent makeup. Some permanent makeup tattoo pigments are designed to assist artists in the simulation of hair and skin color and are formulated with less intensity than body art tattoo pigments, thus, permanent makeup tattoos fade faster than regular tattoos.

3D areola tattoo, also known as areola re-pigmentation tattoo, areola reconstruction tattoo, areola tattoo, or nipple tattoo, is an advanced treatment involving a tattoo application that gives the illusion of the natural color and shape of an areola. It is most often done after breast reconstruction. The procedure can be done in conjunction with surgical nipple reconstruction. If the patient chooses not to undergo surgical nipple reconstruction, a three-dimensional areola tattoo is created with the use light and shadow to give the illusion of an anatomically correct nipple protrusion. Areola tattoo or nipple tattoo requires more than one session.
