How to tighten your skin and get the "glow"

The skin is our single biggest organ and it needs to be very taken care of. As we grown older (and wiser), the elastin and collagen structure in our skin loses and diminishes its elasticity and with it, some of its self-moisturizing and repairing components. Skin aging is heightened by unhealthy activity like excessive exposure to the sun, drinking alcohol, poor diet and, unfortunately in Atlanta, pollution.

Here are five ways of caring for your skin with ingredients at home that will help you regain a youthful glow! If you're really serious about improving your glow and tightening your skin, please consider our Microneedling, skin tightening, and scar revision services here in our Atlanta Office.

Sunscreen – Your skin's biggest enemy is the sun. Excessive exposure to UV rays can cause sagging and wrinkling. Furthermore, unprotected sun exposure can potentially lead to skin cancer. To avoid this, we need sunscreen, and today more companies are offering high SPF-rated products made from either natural or organic ingredients. Apply sunscreen or SPF protective moisturizer 30 minutes before going outside to protect your skin from the scorching Georgia sun. Your skin will thank you later.

Cucumber juice – Have you seen shows where the lead actress puts cucumber slices on her eyes while she's having a makeover? Well, this actually works. Cucumbers have all-natural and completely harmless phytochemicals like cucurbitacins. These firm and tighten the outer layer of your skin by removing accumulated pockets of waste materials and chemical toxins as well as providing nourishment.

Here's how to do it: Cut a cucumber in half, then strain the juice. Take the juice and apply it over your face, leaving it to dry before rinsing it off with cold water. This works best when repeated once a day.

Aloe Vera – Known as the "plant of immortality," aloe vera not only fights aging but also acne, psoriasis, and skin eczema. Its leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, which help with the skin's firmness and hydration.

To use, take an aloe vera leaf and remove its skin. Extract the gel and spread it over your face and neck for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Repeat several times a week.

An alternative way of using aloe vera is making a facemask. Extract one tablespoon of aloe gel from the leaf, and add one teaspoon each of mayonnaise and honey. Mix well, then smear all over the face and leave to dry. When dry, rinse off by first using warm, then cold water. Do this once a week. This is amazing for fighting acne scars and recovery from Microneedling procedures.

Raw Egg White Mask – Raw egg white is a natural astringent that works wonders for sagging skin. Egg whites help tighten, firm and lift skin. If you want instant gratification, this is the mask to go for!

To make the mask, whisk one egg white until light and fluffy, then add one tablespoon of honey. Mix well, then apply on your face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse off using warm, then cold water. Repeat this once a week.

Honey – Honey has been well documented as a natural healing agent since Egyptian times. It helps fade dark spots, discoloration, blemishes and age spots due to its natural enzymatic production of hydrogen peroxide. It also has antioxidants that act as anti-bacterial agents. If you are worried about having a reaction to a mask, this is the mask for you because it is extremely gentle and perfect for sensitive skin. If you want to block the hydrogen peroxide, use Manuka honey.

To make the mask, get raw honey and spread it all over your face. Leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse with warm, then cold water. Repeat this several times in a week.

Cleansing and purifying with honey couldn't be easier.

What Kind of Micropigmentation Is Available?
There are as many choices in hyperpigmentation as there are makeup options. Some people get color on their lips, to reduce the need for lipstick that can feather and bleed away from their mouth. Many decide to get micro pigmentation in their eyebrows to reduce the need to draw them on every day. People who enjoy wearing eyeliner often get permanent micro pigmentation around their eyes, so they have a permanent definition of their eyes.

How Is Micropigmentation Performed?
People who choose micro pigmentation first choose the area to be pigmented. The cosmetic artist will then cleanse the skin thoroughly and numb the area. The micro pigment is then injected into the dermis of the skin, just below the outermost layer, in a process similar to tattooing. There may be mild soreness and swelling in the two days following the procedure, but it is quickly abating when kept covered with sterile ointment.

Let's beat Breast Cancer together!

Breast Cancer Awareness month is October, in this article we look at facts and shed some light on Breast Cancer and also talk about our micro-pigmentation and our permanent makeup solutions for Breast Cancer survivors in Atlanta, GA.

Some light on Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is, unfortunately, the second most common cancer among women in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) right here in Atlanta. About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. We hope to shed some light on some facts about early detection and symptoms, so we can better inform our clients and visitors about such a serious matter that affects us in such a deep way.

Early detection

Breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms are all important factors in early detection of breast health issues. The first step to good breast health is being educated and self-aware of your breasts on a monthly basis. Being self-aware includes visual knowledge of your breasts, as well as how they feel. Women who get their period should examine their breasts the week following the end of their menstrual flow. Women who do not have a period should pick the same week each month to examine their breasts.

Signs and Symptoms of breast cancer

If you experience any of these signs or symptoms, you should consult with your healthcare professional:
  •     The most common symptom is a new lump or mass
  •     A change in the size or shape of the breast
  •     Skin irritation, dimpling, redness or rash
  •     Breast or nipple pain
  •     New onset of nipple inversion (nipple turns inward into the breast)
  •     Clear or bloody nipple discharge

Permanent cosmetics and Areola Tattoo in Atlanta, GA

This is usually described by women as a “finishing touch” procedure for women who have lost one or both nipples through surgery and have fortunately survived Breast Cancer. By using advanced tattooing techniques, the appearance of the nipple can be restored. For some women, this can help them regain a sense of femininity and normalcy in the same way that breast reconstruction can. After successful areola tattooing, the goal is for the recreated nipple to look realistic and match the existing areola or the look of the nipples and areolas prior to mastectomy surgery.

Coconut Oil and it's benefits

jonas-ducker-434668

It's true that healthy skin starts on the inside. But putting the right stuff on the outside can also have a big impact. Here at Anna Burns Permanent Cosmetics, we make sure our clients get the best information, about treating their skin and attaining the beautiful skin they deserve.

Cheap beauty products and chemicals are harsh on your skin, and in some cases, they can actually worsen the problem they're supposed to solve (the most notorious case is harsh cleansers that strip away the natural oils in your skin, which only makes your skin produce even more oil in response). Your skin secretes more oil to make up for the oil lost, thus reversing the actual intention.  Some people also find that the artificial fragrances are irritating or just don't smell good... so let's see our alternatives.

The good stuff is great but it's so expensive...unless you can just walk over to your kitchen counter and grab it!

Virgin coconut oil is one of the best things you can put on your skin. It has healing benefits, it can act as a weak sunscreen, it's a great moisturizer, and it's incredibly versatile; you can use this stuff for almost anything. (Also helps for natural eyelash growth)

1. It Has Skin-Healing Benefits (Our favorite!)

Coconut Oil has amazing antioxidant properties, pigmentation restoration skin tightening, however, the specific nature of the healing benefits (collagen and antioxidants) suggests that it might also help heal sun damage and generic age-related damage – that's definitely something all of us could use a boost on.

2. It's a Gentle but Powerful Moisturizer

Water is the worst thing you could put on your skin if you want to moisturize it. Try it yourself: splash some water on your face, let it dry, Face cream and notice how the skin feels tighter as the water dries out. Now pick up a commercial moisturizer and check the first ingredient: it's probably water. It might feel good at first, but the benefit doesn't last very long.

Coconut oil is precisely 0% water, so it doesn't have this problem. Instead, it actually helps keep moisture in your skin by reducing water loss. And it's incredibly gentle: it's even safe to use on preterm babies with low birth weight. Talk about delicate skin!

Coconut oil does feel greasy when it first goes on – start with a very small amount, and maybe start on someplace that isn't your face so you can get used to the correct amount to use on a less visible area. It's great for dry elbows!

(By the way, the same thing is true about hair: everyone's hair is sleek and smooth when it's wet, but as it dries out, it can get frizzy. But If you leave it unwashed long enough for your scalp to produce a significant amount of oil, then the hair around your head will de-frizz. Coconut oil can replicate that without having to leave your hair unwashed and gross; just rub a little bit on the ends.)

3. It's Powerful Against Acne (Scar Removal & Revision Atlanta)

Coconut oil is rich in a type of fatty acid called lauric acid. And lauric acid may have direct antimicrobial effects against P. acnes, the species of bacteria involved in inflammatory acne. This study found that lauric acid was a very effective antibiotic against P. acnes.

And about the problem of clogging pores: if you start looking, you'll find claims both that coconut oil does clog pores and that it doesn't clog pores. Claims that it does clog pores are based on studies done on rabbits' ears, which is how people used to test cosmetic products. But more recent studies have shown that human skin often reacts differently from rabbit skin. Some substances – like mineral oil – that cause acne in rabbits might be totally harmless to humans. Also, if you've recently done some sort of Microneedling (Such as here in our Atlanta Office) this can be a good way to help speed up the post-procedure recovery and inflammation! (redness)

So is coconut oil among those falsely accused substances? It's not clear yet. For now, it might be safest to play it by ear: if coconut oil makes your acne worse, stop using it. If it helps, keep using it.

4. It can Help with Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin disease that causes itchy, red skin and a painful rash. It's especially common in children, but adults can also get it. Coconut oil is very effective as a moisturizer for people with atopic dermatitis; here's a study showing that it works.

It can also help protect against the skin infections that often come along with atopic dermatitis. People with atopic dermatitis often have to deal with staph infections on their skin (on top of everything else!) This study found that coconut oil was very effective against those infections, much more so than olive oil.

It's cheap, it's easy to use, and you can use it for all kinds of stuff! What's your favorite way to use coconut oil? Let us know on Facebook or Instagram!
